| Welcome to the Sodexo Careers Blog Update!
Last month, Sodexo’s recruiters in the U.S. came together for our first ever Facebook Prom Event to connect with candidates and current employees. Get the Most out of Your Summer Internship!
By return guest blogger Derren Thompson, Manager, Diversity Recruiting for Sodexo
Do you have a great summer internship lined up? Fantastic! Let’s talk about how to get the most out of this summer’s adventures.
Start your internship with an open mind. Many students have preconceived notions about particular jobs. Keep an open mind and make the best of the situation if it doesn’t match your expectations.
Pay attention. Now that you have several classes under your belt, you may feel confident that you know what needs to be done at your internship. However, I caution you to listen carefully and continue to learn. There will be plenty of time to show off your knowledge, but use these early days to absorb everything you’re told and show the hosting manager that you are able to listen and carry out the requested functions. Tornadoes Are Bad; Sodexo Employees Are Truly Amazing
My name is Dianne Harrison, and I am a Senior Director within Sodexo’s Talent Acquisition Department. I live in a very small town in rural Alabama and work from my home. Most people had never heard of Dadeville, AL until April 27th, 2011. This is the day an F4 tornado ripped through the small town of Dadeville, which is a community of less than 3,000 people. As we braced for the unwelcomed visitor, thoughts of what tomorrow would bring seemed inevitable. Moments before heading to the basement of my in-laws’ home, we watched the radar predict a direct hit for our town and simultaneously reviewed the damage done earlier in the day in neighboring Alabama cities and towns. What Is Sodexo?
By Darla Mayse, Sourcing & Recruitment Marketing Specialist
A few weeks ago, one of the popular morning talk shows highlighted Working Mother Magazine’s list of the Best Places to Work for Hourly Employees. Sodexo is one of the top 10 companies. The host then followed up by asking "What is Sodexo?" Someone promptly told her, "It’s a food service company."
Well, not exactly. While food service has been our core business for some time, we are so much more than just a food service company. Sodexo is a world leader in Quality of Daily Life Solutions serving 10 million consumers in 6,000 locations in North America and more than 34,000 worldwide in more than 80 countries. Read more»
Sodexo Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Did you know May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM)?
I knew but I didn’t really know. What I mean is, I knew May was the month Sodexo recognizes Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through our Office of Diversity, but I didn’t really KNOW what this celebration meant.
So I did a little research on Sodexo’s intranet.
I learned Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. In 1990, they expanded the celebration to "Asian Pacific American Heritage Month" (month not just the first week) and then in 2009, it was officially proclaimed "Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month" by President Obama. Famous Firsts by Asian Americans
I am continuing our celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) on this blog with "Famous Firsts" by Asian Americans. I posted something similar for Black History Month in February.
Asian-American Firsts: Government
U.S. Representative: Dalip Singh Saund, 1956, representative from California. The first female Asian American elected to Congress was Patsy Takemoto Mink, elected in 1964 as a representative from Hawaii.
U.S. Senator: Hiram Fong, 1959, one of Hawaii’s first two senators.
Federal court judge: Herbert Choy, 1971, appointed to the U.S. court of appeals for the ninth circuit. Read more»
Will You Go to the Prom with Me?
Will you go to the prom with me?
This might be one of the most important questions I remember about my senior year in high school. That and "what college are you going to?" I graduated high school in 1988 and it’s really hard to believe that was more than 23 years ago. Now the question I tend to ask my friends from high school is, "where did the last 23 years go?" and "how can we be in our 40’s?"
It’s prom time again and my nephew attended his senior prom last week. I know this because he shared photos on his Facebook page, not because I was there to take pictures as he and his friends climbed into a convoy of stretch limos. Seeing these photos brought back memories. So much has changed and yet so much is the same. Read more»
Express Yourself
By Darla Mayse, Sourcing & Recruitment Marketing Specialist
All this talk of prom has brought back very good memories of my own prom.
My high school had a junior senior prom, so I was able have two good memories and dresses. We must not forget the all-important dress. However, looking at some of the dresses today compared to what I wore, I was super-conservative. Many of today’s prom goers look as though they are ready for the red carpet at a Grammy Awards Ceremony. Even the guys get into it. I’ve noticed in a few Facebook photos that the Tuxedo is not necessarily the norm. While the Tuxedo coat is still a staple, looking closer, I notice the pants are actually dark jeans and the shoes are sneakers! I could not have imagined this type of attire for my senior prom. Sodexo Careers Facebook PROM?
Did you go to the prom 20 years ago like I (and other Generation X’ers) did? Or are you a Baby Boomer and go to your prom 35 years ago? Are you asking yourself what the PROM has to do with a career at Sodexo?
The answer is nothing. There really is no direct relationship between going to a prom (and the memories that are associated) and finding a job at Sodexo.
So what’s the point?
The point is really about YOU getting to know US and US getting to know YOU and in the process have a little fun. In 2007, we created our Sodexo Careers Social Networks so that our more than 50 recruiters in the US would be able to connect with potential candidates and current employees. And TODAY we want you to connect with us and join Sodexo’s Talent Acquisition team for our Facebook Prom Event. Read more»
