Guiding Steps to Your Career: Sodexo Career Fairs – Our Big Bang Theory
By Jennifer Heth and Karen Graham, Senior Recruiters

Spring Career Fairs are always an exciting time for Sodexo as we seek out our future leaders and reconnect with alumni from leading colleges and universities. When you visit a Sodexo booth, be prepared and get the biggest bang for your buck! But before you go, here are some tips:

How to prepare before the Career Fair/Job Event:

  • Have copies of your updated and error-free resume
  • Jot down employer booths that you would like to visit
  • Prepare a 30-second overview of yourself; try not to sound scripted
  • Research employers, like Sodexo
  • Read company blogs like the SodexoCareers blog to learn more about company cultures, interview tips, etc.
  • Network with recruiters and other contacts at your selected companies before the event via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn
  • Dress professionally/conservatively

What to do and say during the event:

  • Arrive early – meet employers while they are fresh
  • Company reps are in waiting areas/restrooms – keep your manners in check
  • Ask about current and future opportunities – assume they are hiring
  • Ask what jobs may be a good fit for your experience and background
  • Ask for clarity on internships
  • Don’t wear out your welcome – there is a line forming behind you
  • Leave your resume and take a company business card

What to do after the event:

  • Complete (or update) a Sodexo online profile
  • Review the materials you received and take notes of what you liked
  • Send a follow-up e-mail to the representatives that you met
  • Follow up about one to two weeks later with all companies of interest
  • If you haven’t already, establish connections on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn with those you met at the Career Fair
  • Be patient – due to high volume, a reply might take a week or two
  • Send a thank you note if you interviewed with companies at the event; a thank you note reiterates your interest and experience

Keep an eye on your campus websites and social networking sites for Career Fairs and company/association events. You can also check our list of events to see if we’ll be near you. And, stay tuned for more "Guiding Steps to Your Career" in future issues of Sodexo Career Connections.
