Sodexo College Campus Employees Innovate Sustainable Practices

Sustainable business practices are at the very heart of Sodexo's business models. As such, our college campus employees often have the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for issues like food waste management, clean energy sources and green cleaning programs.

"Sustainability is a strategic initiative for many of our campus clients so we work hard to deliver solutions that reduce waste, carbon emissions and source and serve locally-grown products," said Tom Post, Sodexo President of Campus Services. "Today's students want sustainable campus communities and we help deliver, knowing it helps our clients attract and retain students - and do our part for the environment."

At Binghamton University in New York, the resident Chef Manager worked with a group of senior engineers to tackle the campus' 2,000 pounds of food waste generated each day. Through a design project called "Food to Fuel: Engineering Food Waste into Green Energy," the team developed compatible "briquettes" from the food waste that can be used as a biomass fuel for the on-campus central heating plant.

Similarly, at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., Sodexo teams launched a program that diverted 146 tons of food waste from local landfills through composting efforts this year, which moved Georgia Tech much closer to being waste-neutral.

And, at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sodexo's facilities management team was able to attain LEED-Gold certification at the Cornerstone Arts Center because of its green cleaning program, which has reduced the number of cleaning products by half and significantly reduced water use by switching to microfiber cloths and mops.

For all of their innovative work, these three campuses earned a coveted top rating of 99 on The Princeton Review's Second Annual Green Rating, which evaluates colleges and universities on their environmentally-related policies, practices and academic offerings. Additionally, these schools, along with 71 other Sodexo-served campuses, were recognized on The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges, which was produced in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council; nearly one third of all campuses on the list are served by Sodexo.
