|Pumpkin-Spiced Thoughts for the Fall Season|
By Karen Graham, Senior Recruiter
Fall is one of my favorite seasons with the cooler temps, the colorful landscapes and the smell of pumpkin spice in the morning. Like music, the bouquets of each season conjure up memories of days gone by, whether it's the savory scents of soups and stews or the whiff of fresh apple pies from the oven. Along with these aromas are the bygone stories shared.
Having spent much of my career in the health care industry, I had the honor of meeting so many fascinating residents who live in retirement communities. This segment of the population is growing as millions of baby boomers (people born between the years of 1946 and 1964) are retiring. And, their stories regarding life, work and food are captivating.
According to Laura Cason, Registered Dietitian for Sodexo with Senior Living at the Bridgewater Retirement Community, the residents in that community have a refreshing outlook on life. Their stories are, at times, unfiltered but they come from the heart and Laura states with a smile in her voice, "They make you laugh."
In one story, Laura learned from a resident assessment that Evelyn used to make apple butter so Evelyn's family recipe was re-created during a recent fall activity. Evelyn was also invited to assist with the Resident Garden.
The residents also take part in menu planning with the on-site Sodexo Executive Chef, who encourages resident recommendations on favorite foods that they used to cook/eat. They just rolled out their fall menu with pride and excitement, including:
- Pumpkin and Corn Chowder
- Balsamic Chicken with Apples and Feta
- Maple Glazed Carrots and Baked Butternut Squash
- Fruits of the Forest Pie with Apple Cider
Experiencing food through stories brings back old memories and creates new opportunities to enjoy the combination of food from many cuisines. Do you have a favorite fall food, family story or recipe to share? We would love to hear from you! Share your stories on our Facebook page.
